日本艺伎产生于17世纪的东京和大阪。最初的艺妓全部是男性。18世纪中叶，艺妓职业渐渐被女性取代，这一传统也一直沿袭至今。艺伎并非妓女。她们的交易是满足男人们的梦想?享乐、浪漫和占有欲。通常与她们交易的，都是上层社会有钱有势的男人。

在艺妓业从艺的女妓大多美艳柔情，服饰华丽，知书识礼，尤擅歌舞琴瑟，主业是陪客饮酒作乐。艺妓业是表演艺术，不是卖弄色情，更不卖身。

艺伎社会有着非常规范的各种戒律。比如女人不能结婚，但是可以找个男人当“旦那（资助者）”。为了避免竞争，一个男人只能做一个女人的“旦那”。传说在“丙午年”出生的女性会给男人带来灾难，不宜结婚。结果很多日本女性就因此被父母送入了花柳界，独身一生。正因为艺伎能歌善舞，又恪守贞节，很多达官贵人都对她们爱慕有加。

随着时代的变迁，日本类似的戒律已经不存在了。由于艺伎训练严格，生活辛苦，再加上是以取悦男性为主的服务业，所以这一行业已经成为一种夕阳产业，人数越来越少。据说现在真正称得上艺伎的人也就200多个。

京都是最大的艺伎聚集地，目前共有5条“花街”（即艺伎云集的地方）。日本的“观光京都网”还专门推出了一种与舞伎共餐的特殊服务。所谓舞伎就是还没有“毕业”的艺伎。因为比艺伎年轻，所以很受欢迎，价格也十分昂贵。在高级料亭就餐再找一名舞伎陪同的话，费用高达7500日元，服务时间是90分钟。
